Navigating Amazon’s New Product Title Policy: Insights & Best Practices

Amazon’s latest Product Title Policy Update, effective January 21, 2025, introduces stricter guidelines to enhance clarity, consistency, and customer confidence in product listings. As part of our commitment to staying ahead of marketplace changes, we tested these updates on our client listings to assess their impact and ensure compliance well before the enforcement date.

Key Changes in the Policy:

  • Title length capped at 200 characters for most categories.

  • Restricted use of special characters (!, $, ?, _, {, }, ^, ¬, ¦) - not new but definitely being more strictly enforced now.

  • Repetitive words limited to two occurrences (exempting prepositions, articles, and conjunctions).

Why Compliance Matters:

🔹 Avoiding Listing Suppressions: Non-compliant product titles can trigger suppressions, which may go unnoticed without a robust system to monitor listing status daily. For clients with high average daily sales, these suppressions can lead to significant revenue loss. Proactively updating titles ensures uninterrupted product visibility and sales velocity.

🔹 Enhancing Readability: Concise, structured titles improve readability and align with Amazon’s emphasis on customer experience. Given the sentence cut-off in search results, focusing on the first 100 characters to highlight key product features can help capture customer attention.

🔹 Alignment with Amazon’s Algorithm: Clear and compliant titles are better positioned to align with Amazon’s search algorithm due to the impact on listing quality measures. While the direct impact on performance indicators such as organic ranking, click-through rate (CTR), and conversion remains to be seen, adhering to these guidelines is critical to preserving the quality of Product Detail Pages (PDPs).

What You Should Do Next:

  1. Audit Your Listings: Identify and update non-compliant titles now to avoid sales disruptions.

  2. Be Attentive to Amazon’s Override Suggestions: Brand owners will receive title recommendations—review and act on them within 14 days. Failure to act will result in these autogenerated titles overriding your existing content. In our experience, these suggestions are not always aligned with brand tone or key selling features, hence monitoring these suggestions at least weekly and taking appropriate action to accept or decline them is key.

  3. Stay Informed: Amazon’s Ask Amazon event on January 8, 2025, has ended, but you can still access the discussion thread for valuable insights.

Our Next Steps:

Moving forward, we’ll closely monitor and measure the impact of these updates on key performance indicators such as:

  • Organic Ranking

  • Search Click-Through Rate (CTR)

  • Conversion Rates

We’ll publish these insights to keep you informed – so be sure to follow us
